If you’re planning to start a job at a German airport – whether in the kitchen, in cargo handling, or another role – you’ll quickly come across the term ZÜP. For many candidates, it’s a completely new and unfamiliar concept. Don’t worry – here’s everything you need to know.
What is ZÜP?
ZÜP stands for “Zuverlässigkeitsüberprüfung”, which translates to “reliability check” or background security check. It’s a mandatory clearance required under the German Aviation Security Act (Luftsicherheitsgesetz) for anyone who needs access to restricted areas of an airport.
In simple terms: before you can get your airport ID and start working, you must have an approved ZÜP.
Why is ZÜP necessary?
Airports are high-security environments. Every day, thousands of passengers, tons of cargo, and hundreds of employees move through airport facilities. That’s why the German government requires a background check to make sure that anyone working in sensitive zones is trustworthy and poses no security risk.
ZÜP exists to protect passengers, employees, and you.
What documents do you need for ZÜP?
To start the process, you’ll need to prepare:
Copy of your passport or national ID
Police clearance certificate (criminal record check) from your home country (e.g. Poland)
Completed ZÜP application form – usually provided by your future employer
CV or work history covering the past 5 years, including all addresses and jobs – no gaps!
Note: If you’ve lived in more than one country in the past 5 years, you might need a police clearance from each of them.
Who submits the application?
The employer submits the official application, but you are responsible for gathering the documents and making sure everything is complete and up to date.
How long does the process take?
ZÜP is a government-administered process and typically takes 3 to 6 weeks to complete. Sometimes faster, sometimes a bit longer – it depends on the region and how quickly documents are submitted.
That’s why we recommend starting early if you want to begin working as soon as possible.
Can I start working before my ZÜP is approved?
Unfortunately, no. Without an approved ZÜP, you cannot enter the airport’s restricted areas, which is where most jobs (like kitchens, cargo facilities, and baggage handling) take place.
But don’t worry – at Talent Odyssey, we’ll guide you through the whole process and make sure everything goes smoothly
