Storytelling: The Key to Standing Out in a Hospitality Interview

Have you ever thought that the best answer to an interview question might not be a simple “yes” or “no,” but a story? In the hospitality industry—where communication, personality, and authenticity play a crucial role—storytelling can be the secret weapon that sets you apart from other candidates.

In this article, you’ll learn how to use storytelling to better prepare for interviews and craft memorable answers that will leave a lasting impression on the recruiter.

What is storytelling and why does it matter?

Storytelling is the ability to describe an experience or event in a way that brings it to life for the listener. In an interview setting, storytelling can help you convey your experience in a way that makes you unforgettable.

For example, instead of saying:

“I worked as a waiter for two years,”

Say something like:

“I remember one night we were overbooked and a group of 15 tourists arrived without a reservation. I quickly organized my teammates, we handled the pressure calmly, and in the end, the guests left with smiles and gave us a fantastic review on TripAdvisor.”

That’s storytelling—and it makes a huge difference.

Use the STAR Method

A great technique for telling a complete story during an interview is the STAR method:

  • Situation: Where were you? What was the context?

  • Task: What was the challenge? What needed to be done?

  • Action: What did you do? What techniques did you use?

  • Result: What did you achieve in the end?

  • By using this method, you ensure your story is clear, structured, and relevant to the job.

Choose stories that highlight your strengths

As you prepare for your interview, think about:

  • A time you successfully handled a difficult customer

  • A challenge you faced at the hotel or workplace

  • A situation where you worked effectively as part of a team

  • An experience where you showed initiative or leadership

  • Feedback you received that impacted you

These are the stories that reveal your personality. Make sure to tailor them to the position you’re applying for (e.g., front desk, bar, kitchen, housekeeping, etc.).

Practice—but stay authentic

Preparation is key, but don’t memorize your stories word for word. Speak naturally, as if you’re telling them to a friend. Employers don’t want to hear something robotic—they want a person who is honest, emotional, and real.

You can practice in front of friends, in the mirror, or by recording yourself to identify areas for improvement.

Technical skills matter, but in hospitality, employers hire people, not just résumés. They want to know:

  • Can we trust you with our guests?

  • Can you perform under pressure?

  • Will you contribute positively to our team?

The stories you tell will answer these questions far more effectively than a list of skills ever could.
