F&B – Tips and tricks before the first day of work

If you’re the lucky one that received an offer in F&B department (waiters/waitresses) and will start the job in March or April, here are some tips that might be helpful while getting ready to go there!

Ensure you have a strong command of the English language. This is crucial for effective communication with guests and colleagues from your team.

Practice language skills through language courses, online platforms or apps as Duolingo/Busuu.

Get some culinary Knowledge:

Familiarize yourself with the local cuisine and dining customs. Knowing the menu and being able to recommend dishes to customers will enhance your credibility as a waiter.

Learn about common food allergies and dietary restrictions to provide accurate information to customers.

Master Guest Service Skills:

Develop excellent guest service skills, including being attentive, polite, and responsive to customer needs.

Practice handling difficult situations, such as customer complaints, with professionalism and empathy.

Raise Cultural Awareness:

Research and familiarize yourself with the cultural norms and etiquette related to dining in the country you plan to work in. Different cultures have different expectations regarding tipping, greetings, and table manners.

Understand the local work culture and hierarchy within restaurants.

Stay healthy and active:

Working as a waiter can be physically demanding. Maintain good physical fitness to handle the long hours on your feet and the physical aspects of the job.

 

Remember to maintain a positive attitude, open-mindedness, and cultural sensitivity. Each country and establishment may have unique expectations, so being well-prepared will increase your chances of success and quick adaptation.
